Call for papers for the 18th Pan-European Conference on International Relations, 25–29 August 2025, Bologna.

Political Economy Beyond Boundaries is inviting paper, panel and roundtable proposals for its fifth instalment as a standing section.

Now in its fifth year, PEBB continues to aim to develop and sustain a research network of scholars working in and beyond International Studies to promote critical research on the global political economy. As such, we welcome contributions from scholars working in and across the social sciences and humanities.

Another of the original objectives of PEBB was to contribute to overcoming the pitfalls of Eurocentric knowledge production in (International) Political Economy. To this end, we continue to prioritise and promote knowledge produced in and for the global South, and seek to use PEBB as a platform for fostering meaningful collaborations between scholars in the global South and North.

As it has been the case since PEBB was first established, we are keen to provide a platform particularly for scholars who are researching these themes:

  • Racial capitalism
  • Climate breakdown (extraction, dispossession, climate justice, food sovereignty, ‘green transition’)
  • Production and social reproduction
  • Democracy, emancipation, and political and socio-economic alternatives
  • Critical perspectives on global governance
  • State, capital and labour in and beyond the ‘infrastructural turn’, and especially perspectives from the global South
  • Colonial boomerangs and afterlives in the contemporary global political economy
  • Political economy engagements with crises and conflict, with a focus on perspectives from the global South
  • Empirical and theoretical engagements with Marxist, feminist, and more broadly critical political economy, with a focus on perspectives from the global South
  • Mentoring/career development sessions for doctoral researchers/ECRs and scholars from the global South

We would however be happy to accept proposals that engage with other relevant themes and topics in the broad field of political economy. If you want to check out the work PEBB supported in past editions, please check out our online programmes.

We strongly encourage our participants, especially those who are doctoral researchers, ECRs, precarious academics, and working in the global South, to consider applying for funding provided by the EISA Mobility Fund. You can find further information about the different grants provided here.

Finally, as in the past two years, PEC25 in Bologna will also provide free professional childcare to all participants who might need it.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have questions about any of the above or would like to discuss your proposals. We very much hope to see you in Bologna!
